Coming up… Steps 2 Mental Health walking/wheeling challenge

July 30th, 2020

It’s just about time to lace up those walking boots or oil those wheels – to get moving and show the world we’re doing just fine inside these walls! In fact, we’re inviting the world to join us in taking steps toward mental wellness. Join your Points West Living colleagues, fellow residents, families, and friends from August 10-23 for our #Steps2MentalHealth challenge.

"We are alive and well inside!"

Georg Rath, Ambassador for Community Experience for Connecting Care and Points West Living came up with the idea while monitoring news coverage of COVID and its devastation in a handful of seniors’ homes in Ontario and Quebec. In spite of dealing with the challenges of the pandemic, Georg wants to attract positive attention to show that “We are alive and well inside. Our elders are entrusted to live here with care partners, and they’re doing a tremendous job together to keep each other healthy, mentally and physically.”

The walking/wheeling challenge is both to foster mental wellness through activity, and to demonstrate the richness of life residents and care partners are experiencing in Points West Living and Connecting Care operated homes.

Supporting steps

Residents, employee care partners, family members and community supporters can all come along and have their steps count towards the total for their community and for the Points West Living as a whole.

Employee care partners are excited

Carol Dyck, General Manager of Points West Living Stettler is on the event’s planning committee, and she says her community is already working on strategies to get their steps in. “I’m really impressed with how excited our employee care partners are,” says Carol. “They came up with the idea of competition for steps among cottages and within in each cottage; getting families on board, kids riding bikes, and getting residents out of the building to enjoy the summer sunshine.”

Parking lot tailgate party

A parking lot tailgate party will be held on August 27 at each participating community to celebrate the completion of the walk.

Keeping track of the steps/kilometers will be easy with a custom tracking app being made available a few days before the event kicks off. Check back for more information.

Follow along on the Connecting Care Facebook event page.
