Paint Evening with Ellie (& Kate)
a popular choice

April 8th, 2019

For the past few months, residents at Points West Living Athens Creek in Penticton have enjoyed putting brush to canvas a regular paint night. The sessions are held on the last Sunday evening of each month and are led by recreation coordinator Ellie Bertrand.

"Painting might be fun"

Ellie describes herself as “not an artist by any stretch, but I do enjoy the odd evening of painting.” When she was discussing what activities residents would like to see more of that didn’t involve playing cards (Athens Creek has cards three times a week), some suggested that “painting might be fun.” So, she started a monthly paint evening.

Simple and varied selections

“Leading up to the last Sunday of each month, I try numerous YouTube video tutorials until I find a painting I can lead the residents through,” Ellie says. “I try and keep the paintings simple enough that a person without any artistic training can follow along, but varied so they don’t get bored.

So far the group members have painted a lavender field, large daisy, a night village scene, a koi pond, and jellyfish. “My five-year-old daughter, Kate joins me and helps with setting up the tables,” Ellie says, “as well as painting alongside the residents.”

A new way to express themselves

“The residents seem to enjoy trying something new and many of are finding a new way to express themselves,” says Ellie. “I really enjoy leading them through the paintings and I look forward to improving on my teaching skills.”
