All Points West Living residences are licensed through the Social Care Facilities Licensing Act and follow Alberta’s Accommodation Standards.
Standards of Excellence Inspections (SOE)
Points West Living participates in a program of unscheduled inspections. Inspection results are scored according to service standards, quality of product, cleanliness and organization. Inspections are conducted quarterly in the first year, and semi-annually thereafter. Results of SOEs are made available to owners and governing authorities.
Supportive Living Inspections
Supportive Living Facilities are assessed according to Government of Alberta Standards for Continuing Care Facilities. Operators are provided with a checklist to ensure standards are maintained on a daily basis. All facilities contracted by Alberta Health Services are subject to regular announced and unannounced reviews by Alberta Health Services.
Assessment of New Personnel
We assess new staff competencies within each residential setting to ensure consistent standards. All incoming staff receive in-house training regardless of previously attained credentials.
Health Care Aide Certification
We have one of the highest levels of staff certification in Alberta. In fact, we require all Health Care Aides to be certified. To achieve this goal, we have partnered with the Norquest College Distance Education Program to deliver a top-quality, in-house HCA Certification Program.
Staff Training Incentives
We offer tuition incentives to staff interested in improving their skills, earning certification, or undertaking an apprenticeship.
Policies and Procedures Review
Points West Living has detailed policy and procedural manuals that are reviewed and updated annually by a member of the management team.
All staff participate in personal care, foodservice, housekeeping and recreation tasks in keeping with the Eden Model of Care. It is our belief that involving staff in a variety of day-to-day chores and activities creates a home-like, participatory environment and gives residents a sense of belonging to a larger community.
The successful selection of skilled staff is key to our ongoing success. Candidates interested in working for Points West Living take part in an extensive hiring process that includes two detailed interviews and both a formal and informal assessment.
New staff are given a thorough orientation, a clear job description, and a comprehensive policy and procedures manual to review before starting work under the close supervision of an experienced staff member. A 90-day probation period is in place.
In order to maintain and improve standards of care, our staff participate in a full agenda of continuing education including:
- Mandatory annual retraining in WHIMIS, lifts and transfers, the Heimlich Manoeuvre, CPR, first aid and Foodsafe
- Regular in-service training to review and enhance acquired skills
- Specialized in-service training such as tube-feeding instruction
- Alberta Health Authority training in all facilities
- Dementia and difficult resident seminars
- Back care workshops
To help our staff stay abreast of new developments in seniors care and maintain the highest level of competence, we offer subsidies for educational enhancement.
All staff are subject to an annual performance review.
Care of Staff
Our staff are treated well and competitively paid. They receive full benefits including sick pay that begins once the probationary period is complete.
Points West Living communities offer practicum spaces for Health Care Aides and Licensed Practical Nursing students from local colleges.
Our Staff are a Team
Although our staff is comprised of people with a variety of professional and non-professional designations, our vision of a family style community involves all staff in all aspects of care. Staff members are specifically chosen for their teamwork abilities and their commitment to the Eden Model of Care. We believe that we have employed some of the best people available: dedicated professionals who see each day as an opportunity to better their own lives as they assist seniors in the pursuit of health and happiness.
