PWL Wainwright floor-curlers
face first inter-community competition

April 26th, 2017

When Points West Living Wainwright received a new floor-curling set earlier this year, residents quickly embraced the game. It didn’t take long for the more competitive curlers to begin preparing for a curling showdown. So, it was with great anticipation that two teams, along with a few fans and care partners boarded the community bus for their inaugural inter-community floor curling competition.

Playing and preparing

“We’ve had a great time playing and preparing ourselves for this,” says recreation coordinator Jenna Hopaluk. “It’s been a regular activity on our calendar these past few months, and brings lots of residents either to play or to watch and cheer on.”

Jenna started asking other resident communities if they had their own floor curling sets, and if any would be interested in a fun tournament. Battle River Lodge was, and offered to host the event, fielding two teams of its own.

Showdown with Battle River Lodge

Showdown day was Wednesday April 17, and the four teams faced each other across the dining hall at Battle River Lodge for the round robin style tournament.

“All four teams tried their very best,” reports Jenna, “and all had some pretty amazing shots, but PWL was the big champion. Both PWL teams faced off for the final with a real nail-biter of a game.”

Planning for the next tournament

Jenna says it was great fun, with some highly competitive participants, and others there to just enjoy the outing and activity or to visit with friends. “This might have been our first dueling tournament,” Jenna says, “but it most definitely won’t be the last! We are already planning the next bigger and better tournament!”

Just in! The date for a rematch has been set for Friday May 19th.
