Lloydminster seniors explore immigrant roots
at Canada Day One Exhibition

February 22nd, 2017

A group of residents from Points West Living Lloydminster got to enjoy a day immersed in the immigrant experience on February 16. The event which included a complementary Seniors Tea was held at the Lloydminster Cultural and Science Centre and featured Canada: Day One

Lloydminster one of only ten host communities

Canada: Day 1 is a travelling exhibition produced by the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 in Halifax. Lloydminster is one of only ten communities across the country to host the legacy project created for Canada’s 150th anniversary. It runs through to March 26, when it will move on to the Canadian Museum of History in Ottawa/Gatineau.

Sharing the immigration experience

PWL Lloydminster recreation coordinator Jackie Orbeck accompanied residents Nancy Showers, Iva Haan, Norbert Koch, Gwen Christensen and Beth Kent to the event. “At the tea, we were encouraged to talk about immigrating to Canada and homesteading in this area,” Jackie says.

“Norbert Koch had told us the story of how his parents left Austria in1895 and travelled to Rylander Wisconsin. They settled there until 1904 when they travelled to Bodo Alberta and farmed there until it dried up, eventually bringing them to Marsden Saskatchewan in 1928. There, they bought their first half section of land, where, Norbert says, the original house was built and is still standing.”

“It was a fantastic day!”

“After our tea we enjoyed a special exhibit of various pictures and stories of different people of all nationalities who came to Canada,” continues Jackie. “Once we finished there we took a tour of the Museum. It was a fantastic day!”
