New General Manager no stranger
to PWL Lloydminster

January 27th, 2017

The new General Manager for Points West Living Lloydminster needs no introduction; at least to residents, families and care partners. Sarah Walker has been a part of the community since the day it opened in May 2008.

Helped out in every department I could

Back then, Sarah who was certified as a Rehabilitation Practitioner, started working as a Health Care Aide while working on her HCA certification with Norquest College. “I was an HCA team leader in the memory cottages, and other cottages as well,” says Sarah. “I helped out in every department I could, and always pitched in in the kitchen.”

That level of involvement flowed naturally into the recreation coordinator role, and Sarah was soon planning events and sharing fun with residents and with PWL News.

Captivated by Eden

Along the way, Sarah became captivated by the Eden Alternative philosophy of care. Achieving her own Eden Alternative Associate training in 2012, Sarah spearheaded PWL Lloydminster’s Eden journey, which resulted in the community’s acceptance in the select Eden Registry a year ago (PWL News article).

As General Manager, the Eden journey continues to be a priority for Sarah. “I am looking to growing our community’s Eden Journey,” she says, “and to grow our care partners’ journeys; to move from task focus to resident focus.”

Double duty, plus studies

While working on ‘warming the Eden soil’, and recreation duties, Sarah took on the PWL Lloydminster’s office administration duties, and began to study the ASCHA (Alberta Senior Citizens Housing Association) Site Manager Program from Red Deer College. “I’m still taking it,” she laughs, “I’ve got two courses to take this spring, then I’ll be finished.” When former GM, Suzanne Power retired at the end of December, Sarah was ready to apply for the position. She was chosen and began her GM journey on January 16.

"I'm a Belieber!"

Although she was born in Grande Prairie, Sarah has lived in Lloydminster since she was four years old. She’s not married and doesn’t have kids of her own, but she gets to share her long term boyfriend’s two girls. She is a self-proclaimed 'Belieber', “I love Justin Bieber!” she says, and that’s not all. “I love Zoomba; I like to work out. I’m not a good dancer but I love to dance, and love planning parties and celebrations.”
