Eden Philosophy Thriving in Wainwright

October 18th, 2011

Staff from PWL Wainwright were recently part of an Eden Training session where staff were asked to evaluate how well their facility incorporates the Eden Philosophy of Care into daily operations.

Wainwright’s Amy Drummond attended the training and was one of several staff asked to answer questions designed to spark new ideas and ensure that Edenizing is a never-ending process designed to create an elder-centered community where the plagues of loneliness, helplessness, and boredom are kept at bay.

Drummond, an LPN and Educational Lead at PWL Wainwright, says their facility is

lucky to have started in a brand new facility with new staff who were immediately introduced to the philosophy and to the company’s belief that seniors should live with dignity and choice.

“In addition to orientation training, we have six staff members who have attended Eden retreats and brought back that knowledge to share with other staff. Our general manager, along with our full time recreation health care aid, also had the opportunity to go to a site in Saskatoon for a three day information session where Eden is alive and well.”

Drummond said residents and staff meet regularly to brainstorm ways they can create a better life at Points West.

“A resident council meeting is held monthly and all residents are encouraged to attend to bring up their ideas for a more enjoyable living environment,” she said. “Staff members eat with the residents at meal times and the conversation is always open to bring up and concerns or areas for improvement. We have a complaints and concerns form that is accessible to the residents and families so we can try and find solutions and the silver lining to any concerns.”
