St. Patrick’s party at PWL Stettler was a
celebration of friends and ‘good old Irish fun’

March 22nd, 2019

Residents enjoyed some ‘good old Irish fun’ as they gathered in the main dining room at Points West Living Stettler to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. The room was decorated in green and shamrocks, and as they arrived, each resident got decked out in green necklaces, neckties and scarves, and a bit of silly Irish naming. Everyone received their own unique ‘leprechaun name', such as Lucky McStumpy, Goldie McSmelly, or Flirty Nugget Nose.

Crafting a little St. Patrick's colour

A couple of days before the party, a group of residents gathered to create some clover art to add a little St. Patrick’s colour to the community. It was a little messy, but great tactile fun with lovely results. Lisa Smith, Recreation Therapist, says each resident was given a piece of white cardstock that had a green cut-out clover taped to it. “Residents dipped their fingers into paint and outlined the clover shape, then decorated the remainder of the paper however they wished.” Once the paint was dry, the clover was removed and the resulting artwork was mounted on colourful construction paper.

Festive green beverages

At the St. Patrick’s party, on March 15, residents and guests were offered festive green beverages as they entered, such as beer, apple juice or water, and they enjoyed some sweet green cake decorated with toppers made by recreation care partners.

Recollections of life in Ireland

“For entertainment, we tried something new,” says Lisa. “A friend from my university days, Graham Scott, has spent a couple of years in Ireland, and I knew he had some funny stories to tell so I asked if he’d come in and share some of his experiences.” He did come and shared with residents some stories, funny Irish pronunciations, and unique characteristics of the country and people.

“The residents enjoyed seeing a new face and fresh stories to add to their St. Patrick’s Day celebration. It was a fun and entertaining afternoon.”
